Day 43 - Uploading

****If you have not completed the course evaluation please do so.****

Today we will upload your portfolio to your Arches webspace. No matter the size of your portfolio it should fit because I asked EITS to increase your space. I received a message yesterday indicating my request was fulfilled.

Moving your files to your Arches space is really simple process if all of your files are within your portfolio folder. It is just a matter of accessing a file transfer protocol (FTP) client to send the files to a server. In our case will use WS_FTP on the PC or FUGU on the Mac.

The handout I have provided you gives you step-by-step directions. Please go ahead and upload your files. Once you have done so check to make sure everything works by opening a browser and typing in your URL.

If all is well, please complete the check-out sheet and leave it with me before you leave.

Fall course announcement - if you would like to know more please contact Gretchen Thomas at If you would like to enroll in the course e-mail Gretchen your full name and last 4 digits of your social security number. OASIS states that you need EDIT 2010 as a prerequisite and that is incorrect.

EDIT 4160 – Design and Development Tools – 3 credits -Students will learn a variety of tools appropriate for computer-based development. These include graphics, media, and software development tools. Students will be required to write a contract for the specific tools and curriculum materials they choose to learn. Students will work independently learning computer-based tools. In addition, scheduled class time will allow students to self select workshops, collaboration with peers, and assistance opportunities with instructors. This class will employ a mixture of structured learning and independent learning experiences at the discretion of the student. Ultimate performance in the class will be evaluated using a complex rubric that focuses on the major application project that students construct independently.

The class will meet T/Th 9:30-10:45.

My job update - As you know I went to FL for a job interview at the University of North Florida. Well, before they extended an offer of a job to me I rescinded my name from the candidate pool. I was offered a post-doctoral position here in the Learning & Performance Support Laboratory (LPSL), a research lab right next door to this room. I decided that the position in the LPSL would be in my best interest. Therefore, I will be on campus for at least another 2 years.

A very enjoyable semester! If I were asked how did I like teaching my EDIT 2000 class this versus last semester the precious statement would serve as my answer. You all have truly made me smile this semester with your personality, your knowledge about education, and your enthusiasm for learning (despite the technical glitches).

I hope that you all have learned from this course as I have definitely learned from you. I wish you much success throughout your educational career and your future career, whatever that may be. I have confidence that each of you will be successful!

Please know that I am willing to be a resource for you. Although I am not teaching EDIT 2000 next year, I can still aid you if needed. I am a mere e-mail away!

Take care, good luck on your finals, & have a great summer!

Day 42 - additional info

Although I would like for you to have everything done by Wednesday, I realize some of you may not make it. Don't fret. You should come to class on Wednesday and continue plugging away. I will go over uploading and final thoughts on Wednesday. If you don't get your site uploaded on Wednesday we will do so on Friday.

Day 42 - Optional Day

When you come to class on Wednesday you should have your portfolio ready to upload to your Arches space. Make sure all of the files that you have linked from your website are within your portfolio folder. Also, all images should be in the pictures folder (which is in the portfolio folder).

If you have images embedded in files, such as PowerPoint, those will be included in the PowerPoint file. You don't need to move the image over to the pictures folder.

If you need a handout from the past few weeks they are linked on Day 41.

Wednesday is upload day. If your entire portfolio uploads just fine (meaning all of the links work) then you are done - you do not need to come to class on Friday. If, for some reason, you have problems and it doesn't get uploaded we'll have to work on it on Friday.

**Don't forget about the Final Reflection paper. A hard copy is due to me by Monday, May 1st. You are more than welcome to turn it in prior to Monday.

Please complete the course evaluation.

Day 40 - Fireworks exporting redux

Alright, we are going try exporting your Fireworks files once again - for those who didn't get it done on Monday. Although I felt like Alexander on Monday, I'm determined to have a better day today. I spent some time on Monday afternoon manipulating the program and I think (cross your fingers) I have a handle on it.

I created a new handout with the updated information and I'm hoping it works. :>)

I know Monday was a bit chaotic and I hope that experience didn't turn you off to technology. Technology is ever changing and one can't know all the ins and outs of every program - especially when a change is made in a matter of months.

I apologize for the chaos and I am optimistic that you will achieve success today!

Day 39 - Fireworks export day

You should have your 2 graphics files complete today, the menu page and the photo page for your autobiography page. The file should be exported to reduce the size of the graphic file. If you take a look at your images folder and look at the size of the file in its current format you are likely to find a fairly large file (depending on the number of graphics on the page). In its current state the file is too large for your portfolio. Once it is exported the file extension will change to a .gif and it will be significantly smaller. After you have performed the export take a look at the size once again to see the difference.

See the handout which tell you step-by-step how to export your files. You should also create links in Fireworks before exporting (see handout).

Once you have exported the file you may not insert it the file into Dreamweaver as in image. The photo page should go on your autobiography page. The menu page will be on your index page.

You haven't actually created your index page. In order to do so, create a new file in Dreamweaver, save it as index.html. Now, insert your menu image. Adjust the image by centering if necessary. You may want to insert a table, 1X1, and insert image in the table. Be sure to add the UGA disclaimer at the bottom of the page as you have on the other pages along with your name.
